Proud simply because they beat England to it. More frightening is that their “leaders” have no clue how the country will make it economically after independence. Highly unlikely after years of dependency and socialism they will embrace making the country an economic free haven.

They’ve said that it would be paid for with oil money from the North Sea.

Good luck squaring that with the greens that are also pushing for secession.

Many problems in store: for instance right now Scotland brings in a lot of "invisible" income through its financial services industry. After the break-up a lot of these institutions will suddenly look very large compared to the economy of their host country, and presto!, the Iceland effect kicks in - people are still gun-shy about putting money in large institutions in small countries.

Aside from that, the Scotch and tourism industries have a great future, and probably the knowledge-based sector based on the continuing high quality of higher Ed. In fact shrinking the financial sector would probably be a good thing - freeing up some bright people to do productive things instead.
