GM was crap starting in the 90s with their seat belts mounted on the doors. It was considered SRS. But in a side impact with door damage you would be unrestrained.
They did this to avoid installing airbags from the mandate. Volvo had airbags in the 80s.
GM offered airbags as early as the mid-’70s, at least Buick did.
