In a remote village in the dangerous northeastern Kunar province of Afghanistan, Army Green Beret Maj. Jim Gant was doing something few others had he was making progress against the enemy.
To do so, he and his men went native trading their body armor for traditional Afghan garb, growing long beards, speaking the local Pashto tongue, and forging close alliances with tribesmen, who would come to revere Gant as Commander Jim.
But when he went to bed at night, Gant had one thing his men did not company.
Ann Scott Tyson, a Washington Post war correspondent, quit her job to live secretly with him on the front lines where he taught her how to shoot an assault rifle for protection. They drank alcohol and made their own rules.
When his commanders got wind of the domestic bliss he carved out for himself in the heart of a war zone, Gant was quietly relieved of his command and pushed to retire in disgrace.

I saw a special about this guy. After he was kicked out of the military they went home and divorced their spouses. He cried about everything that happened to him and now looks sort of like a muslim which he has probably become. I’m not sorry for him. Just saying.
I believe SunTzu said “a long war benefits no one”.

I served with a guy claimed to be the OLDEST O-3 EVER!!!
WWII - Vietnam!
He loved to fight! That included most any barroom.
To be in combat and learn you’re being led by an alcoholic drug addict isn’t something any of us want to experience.
IMHO, the Army did right in ridding its self of this guy.
Thanks.
The horror...
They pump our guy full of Bennies. Courage in a pill.
The end result is extreme PTSD when they try to shake off them.
Thanks Tammy8 .. I did finally find it at Amazon.
Who is going to play this guy in the movie. I think Marlon Brando is dead and Martin Sheen may be too old now. I think the guy was probably doing his job the best way he knew how. No body got killed on account of his actions. It seems like he did what he was supposed to do. He won the hearts and minds of the indigenous population. How does it go, The leg runs away from the snake. The paratrooper kills the snake. The Ranger eats the Snake. The S. F. guy makes friends with the Snake and teaches it to go out and kill other snakes.
Semper Fi and Good Night Chesty Puller Where Ever You Are!!
I highly doubt the snake was out killing other snakes
