Mitch McConnell, the NRSC and the Chamber of Commerce went all in for moderate Thad Cochran in Mississippi (57% conservative rating with Heritage Action):
Back in Washington, Cochrans most important allies resolved to muffle their anxiety and stick with him for another three weeks. The Chamber of Commerce polled the race, concluded the senator had a difficult but viable path to victory; the group began brainstorming inventive ways to make a splash in the state, culminating with a sensational commercial starring NFL legend Brett Favre. National Republican Senatorial Committee political director Ward Baker, confronted with Beltway pessimism about Cochrans chances, repeatedly told Republicans in D.C.: We dont leave our people on the field.
But it took 35K Democrats to push him past grassroots challenger Chris McDaniel:
Surprisingly, more votes were cast in the runoff than in the June 3 primary. McDaniel increased his vote from 155,000 on June 3 to 184,600 last night. But the 25-35,000 Dems who crossed over to vote for Cochran gave him the extra margin to surpass his opponent.
This is more reason for Chris McDaniel to run as a write-in candidate in the general election.

I don’t think Barbour did that. He’s GOPe, but he’s not stupid and would know the serious consequences of driving Conservatives to stay home or vote the Dem in November.
I think he (and Rove) was too smart by half. They wanted just enough Dem votes to provide a margin if the election was close, but not enough to tick off Conservatives.
The margin wasn’t close. Cochrane won by 6,000 in a situation where 35,000 Dems crossed over to vote for him. That means he really lost the GOP vote by 30k.
This isn’t a simple shooting yourself in the foot. This is a nightmare scenario of nuking yourself. We aren’t just talking consequences for this cycle by for many cycles to come. The GOPe played with fire and the Dems were able to exploit it in a way where there’s no way to regain any semblance of trust for the forseeable future.
I agree with other replyers. The Democrats did not do this of their own volition. They were asked to by Republicans, and they complied.
Collusion by both parties to sway an internal Republican election.

How wrong-headed can they get?
Exactly.
The GOPe has a big awakening coming this Fall I suspect. When you dig a pit for another guy, you just may find yourself down at the bottom of that pit.
So how is voting for the enemy, which is what you suggest by advising vote for the Dem, not going to be an action with very negative consequences?
Anger is clouding your judgment.
Why would it take a decade??? This is not an amendment to the USA constitution...it is a state legislative issue. A vote by the the state legislators and endorsement by the governor does the job very quickly!!! IMHO.....all primaries should be closed allowing only Republican or Democrat voters to participate in their own primaries...period!!!
Again, I don’t think the GOPe did that. They aren’t that stupid, (or at least stupid in that way) and would know that direct collusion with the Dems would drive a Cochrane loss in November.
They were counting on a small winning margin in a close election. Which didn’t happen. Now they’re effed ...
McDaniel is in the catbird’s seat on this one, I believe. He can demand a recount, fight the irregularities and win. He needs to shame the GOP into demanding that Cochran step down. Barring that McDaniel needs to be loyal to the ideals we stand for and run Third Party/write in/Independent.
Cochran IS the enemy.
Like I said, enjoy the next 2 years.
You earned it.
I agree, But we have been divided since Rockefeller, Keating,Javits, Frelinghuysen, Scranton, Romney etc stuck the knife in the back of Barry Goldwater.
What more rank and file Republicans need to understand is that RINOs would rather have a Democrat get elected than a conservative Republican. They did just that recently with Lonegan for Governor in NJ and another Tea Party candidate in Virginia.
And frankly I have had it. I no longer contribute to the GOP,just to individual conservative candidates.
And were I a conservative voter in Mississippi I would try to give the Democrat candidate the same narrow margin of victory the RINOs gave Cochran in the primary.
Its time to pay these people back in their own coin or this situation will continue indefinitely. They screwed Barry Goldwater in 1964 and its 2014 - half a century of two faced perfidy.
Giles, your reasoning is as fallible as your math.
If all the conservatives voted Dem, IT WOULD MAKE THE DEMOCRAT PARTY AND LIBERALISM STRONGER. Period!
You may intend for it to hurt the GOP and indeed it would hurt the GOP, but so what? Again, you're engaging in the fallacy that you can vote "against" the GOP. That function of a vote is imaginary and based in emotional perception; the REALTY is that the only thing you EVER get to do with a vote, is to use it to vote FOR something.
How about being HONEST for a change just vote FOR a candidate who if elected will do what you WANT, even if you know he will probably lose because he isn't affiliated with the Republican or Democrat parties?
That is the HONEST way to do it. What is with all this deception of voting FOR what you despise with expectations that it will somehow "trick" good into happening?
>> To hell with RINOs.
Damn straight.
>> No...write in is not going to work.....it will elect the Democrat!!!
Opposed to Cochran that won the primary with Democrat votes?
The GOP-e is NOT our ally.
Heya, FRiend Zulu, ping to my post #158 so you understand that I advocate voting FOR something other than the RINO as well as voting FOR something other than the Democrat. Like you, I am loath to vote for RINOs. My vote goes elsewhere — just not to Democrats.
Not to be too blunt about it, but what you ‘think’ is beside the point. All that matters is what actually happened:
“The saga began when state Democratic Party chairman Rickey Cole said Murray is part of a group of Democratic operatives being paid to get out the vote for Cochran by targeting Democratic voters and using walking around money to incentivize turnout.”
snip
“Cole, the states Democratic Party chairman, wrote in a Facebook message earlier this week that Pete Perry, the chairman of the Hinds County Republican Party, is paying James Scooby Doo Warren thousands of dollars to funnel to black preachers and others to get-out-the-vote for Cochran.
He is working with Lane (LC) Murray and probably also Greg Brand, Cole added in his message.
Large sums of cash are being passed around. These guys are old school walking around money vote buyers, Cole wrote.”
snip
“On Friday morning, black Mississippi conservative radio host Kim Wade of WYAB posted on Facebook that many black pastors throughout the state are on the take.
Ok, here the going rate being paid by the GOP for cross over votes Tues, Wade wrote. The bag man is dispensing $5000 a pop. Their contact will pay the pastor $2000 cash if instruction to go out and vote for Thad comes from the pulpit. $1000 cash to the pastor if the pastor allows a 3rd party to make the appeal. Individuals are to be offered $25.00 to vote. Most of that money is usually kept by the pastor and his money contact and they just make the appeal to their members.”
They did nuke themselves.
Spectacularly.
The fallout hasn’t really even reached the ground yet.

The Mississippi Conservatives PAC is headed up by Henry Barbour. Nephew of Haley.
The same PAC, headed by Henry Barbour, put out this robocall. I actually got this call last Friday.
