One of the posters is speculating that the Russians didn't didn't actually kill the pirates, just turned them over to the authorities.
OK, fine. But who are the authorities on the high seas other than the captain of the rescue vessel?
I’m familar with the story. First of all it is not related to an oil tanker and true, none of the pirates were killed in the incident, just a paki capitan of the mother ship had his leg shot for being too much agitated during arrest.
It doesn’t mean these guys were ok after all. All have been handed to Iranian coast guard and in Iran piracy is punished by hanging so none of them is alive.
As for a tanker, one pirate was killed and another wounded but it was because they tried to shoot at boarding helicopter.

None was shot or even arrested after being captured this time. Survivors were given inflatable and released.
