A friend at Mrs S’s law firm is a patent lawyer, he’s going check it out for us. Just wondering how often manual skimming needs to be done on a pool.

Depends upon what drops in the water. Leaves, chunks of mulch etc will clog a skimmer’s screen, and cause the pump to suck air, overheat and possibly/probably cause a burnout. If it’s an older pump, the bearings will let go and spew oil into the pond, harming fish. If it’s a new ceramic mag-drive pump, it’ll have an auto-thermostat and just shut down and not burnout.
