Texas Gov. Rick Perry probably shouldn't have attempted to make the case that gay people can "decide not to" be gay despite genetic predisposition, he conceded Thursday, offering no semblance of an apology but trying instead to rally attention back to his message about jobs and the economy.
"I got asked about an issue," Perry, a Republican, explained during a lunch hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. "And instead of saying, 'You know what? We need to be a really respectful and tolerant country - to everybody - and get back to talking about: Whether you're gay or straight, you need to be having a job.' And those are the focuses I want to be involved with.
"Instead," he went on, "I readily admit - I stepped right in it."
Perry was asked during an appearance in San Francisco last week whether he believes homosexuality is a disorder. He seized the opportunity to liken "the homosexual issue" with the physically debilitating disease of alcoholism.
"Whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not," he said, "you have the ability to decide not to do that. I may have the genetic coding that I'm inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that. And I look at the homosexual issue the same way."
The remark, delivered during an appearance at the San Francisco Commonwealth Club, drew "murmurs of disbelief" from the audience, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, though it merely echoed a similar comparison he made in his 2008 book, "On My Honor."
It's not the first time Perry - who's currently chewing over a 2016 White House run - has "stepped in it," nor is it the first time he's turned that particular phrase.

We KNOW that there is a genetic predisposition in some people to be alcoholic. Does this excuse them from public intoxication and DWI? Why should a genetic predisposition to Homosexuality, which has never been seen or pinpointed, be excused much less celebrated?
Homosexuals are sick, just like active alcoholics. Treatment works for both. That is a PROVED fact. People have turned away from drinking and homosexual activity through treatment and prayer.
I have never known a gay or a lesbian who wasn’t a raging sex addict. Their lives are built around their addiction.
Pre-civilization they would have simply been raped by the biggest conquering savage regardless of their attraction to someone of the same sex.
RE: I have never known a gay or a lesbian who wasnt a raging sex addict. Their lives are built around their addiction.
Then why do many of them want to get married and have kids?
Are you saying that most of these marriages are “open”?
I’m with Perry to the extent that I know a fair amount of middle-aged men who’ve raised families within monogamous heterosexual marriages, and have gone all-homo once the children were grown.
(P.S. I ain’t one of ‘em.)
Didn’t the AMA just come out and say it WAS a choice? Gender is not genetic, it is how you FEEL.
Blew up right in his face, didn't it?
If sexual orientation is genetically determined, then the concordance rate among identical twins should be 100%. If one twin is gay, so should be the other. Alas, the concordance rate, according to researchers Peter Bearman from Columbia and Hannah Bruckner from Yale, is somewhere between 5% and 7%. Oops.Nuff said. - See more at: here. The Guardian swallows hard, but notes this fact:
"The flawed thinking behind a genetic test for sexual orientation is clear from studies of twins, which show that the identical twin of a gay man, who carries an exact replica of his brother's DNA, is more likely to be straight than gay. That means even a perfect genetic test that picked up every gene linked to sexual orientation would still be less effective than flipping a coin."In other words, the genetic evidence for biological causation is so poor you'd have better luck predicting orientation by throwing darts blindfolded.
We KNOW that thousands of men and women who where once active homosexuals have been, through prayer and treatment, are now in heterosexual relationships that are successful and sexually fulfilling.
If an alcoholic wants to recover, he avoids taking the first drink. If a homosexual wants to recover, he avoids homosexual acts.
That is my impression. Yes.
Only as far as liberals are concerned.
RE: Didnt the AMA just come out and say it WAS a choice?
I don’t know, did they? If so, I’d like to know where...
Many alcoholics even realize they have a drinking problem.
A study to be released next month is offering a rare glimpse inside gay relationships and reveals that monogamy is not a central feature for many. With straight people, its called affairs or cheating, said Colleen Hoff, the studys principal investigator, but with gay people it does not have such negative connotations.
You don’t have to convince me.
Alcoholics, dickaholics.........
And at least one conservative: Rick Perry "stepped right in it" comparing gays to alcoholics
Most, try ALL homosexual relationships are open. They are either open or they are ravaged by infidelity.
It is not even an issue that Homosexuals are predisposed to sexual adventurism. The average homosexual man has had hundreds of sexual partners in a lifetime. Literally HUNDREDS. A large percentage have had sex with thousands of their fellow travelers.
Only 20% of heterosexual men and 9% of women have more than 15 sexual partners in a lifetime. According to the CDC the average man has 7 sexual partner in a lifetime and the average women has 4. This is even after all the ‘sexual revolution’ crap.
A.P. Bell and M.L Weinberg in their study of male and female homosexuals found that 43% of white homosexuals have had sex with at least 500 different sex partners and over 25% had more than a thousand sex partners. In their study of over 2,700 homosexuals only 2.7% claimed only ONE sexual partner and the AVERAGE answer from 21% was between 101 to 500 sexual partners.
These people are sick. They are sexual addicts who need treatment, not marriage and adoption rights!
