A handful (three? four?) of French ops guys were allowed into Mecca under diplomatic passports to do an assessment of the situation for the House of Saud. The identity of special ops guys involved seems to be in dispute. Some say French, some say Pakistani.

It wouldn’t be surprising that Pakis were also involved, but the French were there.
