You can get 10mps download satellite for $59 a month. That is competitive with cable.
Cell phone internet is competitive and also VERY portable. I used to have DSL and had no major issues with it even over phone lines built in the 70’s.

That offer gets you 20GB download capacity (or you can pay 69 for 50 gigs) or about 8 netflix movies in HD. Again they are NOT in the same league because they have very limited bandwidth due to the limits of wireless.

IF Big Media had not snapped up Big Communications you might get some real competition with multiple Cable and DSL phone companies but that ship has sailed and it will never come to pass to extract them while the Lords of K Street run Washington D.C.
