Comcast is testing data caps for its broadband internet customers that would limit them to 300 GB of data per month, according to The Times Leader.
Comcast has started open trials of its home broadband data caps in several large markets around the country.
Here are all the regions affected:
Mobile, Alabama
Huntsville, Alabama
Tuscon, Arizona
Atlanta, Georgia
Augusta, Georgia
Savannah, Georgia
Jackson, Mississippi
Charleston, South Carolina
Knoxville, Tennessee
Memphis, Tennessee
All of central Kentucky
The entire state of Maine

How do I find out how much I’m downloading?
Put Bitmeter on your computer. Its a freebie.
I have been on the 300GB limit in Memphis for quite a while. Netflix does not count, for some strange reason.
Netflix is paying Comcast for priority carriage.

That looks political. Anyway this should be illegal. Congress gave these horrible companies a monopoly in return for building the infrastructure. Time to break them up and allow access to all comers. Broadband caps in an age when more and more information is expected to be delivered? Obscene, mean, and greedy. I am all for capitalism, but this is not capitalism this is a government granted monopoly over the broadband cable pipes.
According to the meter on my modem ,FR is about 70Kb for a text only page.
It’s the graphics that do the damage.
(I’m on 15G a month contract.)
I figured it was something like that. Thank you for the link.
I doubt most of us ever get anywhere near 300GB in an average month.
“I wonder if this is being prompted by people whove decided that they dont need the cable TV becasue they are satisfied with streaming Netflicks. But for my wife who wants her cable, I could easily live with Netflicks only.”
I am one of those users who pays for internet only and watches Netflix/Hulu etc. I get regular emails from COX about my usage but so far no increase in fees.
They are not counting the bandwidth of Netflix usage either.
I have no problem with this. What I do have a problem is with the lack of competition in broadband providers.
That said, I despise Comcast as a company.
I'm curious if Comcast allows a user to look up their data usage.
Thanks. My modem just has blinky lights. I can’t even tell what they mean.
I piggy back (switch to home WIFI) on my Galaxy. I have lower caps on my Tmobile account. I say I don’t have caps but after checking apparently I do. AT&T doesn’t charge for going over a 150GB cap in a month but will if you do it every month for few months. Their excuse is that high users causes congestion. Like driving a truck down a two lane freeway meant for compact cars. ISP’s then charge the trucks for using the roads and pocket the money instead reinvesting it in the infrastructure to build bigger better roads.
So Netflix pays them some cash and they exempt Netflix from the caps. Too bad if you want to watch the World Cup on ESPN, or Fox News stream, or any other content that didn’t pay Comcast for the “fast lane”.
I got rid of my DirecTV. Use Hulu and Netflix and have all the documentaries I want on Youtube.
Not to be snarky, but it sounds like capitalism.
I have Charter for internet only and use Netflix for tv. I buy their highest residential internet package, which is sold as specifically for streaming, and my hi def movies load like a pop, no waiting. I’m happy, Charter is happy, and I’m still saving money over cable tv.
You mustn't have a teenager living in your household.
