PARTS of Sydney have been shut down tonight after fears an inner city unit was being used as a bomb making factory.
Just before 6pm more than 15 fire brigade units and number of police raced to Wentworth Park Rd, near Glebe and immediately evacuated the area.
The light rail has also been closed down.
Police said a number of gas cylinders were on the premises and there was some concern what their purpose was for.
The area has been sealed off as a precaution.
Fire brigade units were told to restrict any communications to the phone and not over unsecure radio frequencies.
Residents were evacuated after up to five explosions rocked a government housing unit block.

Another possibility is a meth lab. I hope that’s what it is. Bad enough, but better than a bomb factory.
Are propane tanks a common thing in Sydney? I wish there were pictures of the “gas cylinders” just so we’d know what sort.
The Mooslims love them some mass murder.
The article is so politically correct that it’s worthless. The police are looking for a suspect that an eye-witness saw, but there is no description nor name. They also talk about suspicious activity, but don’t bother to tell us what that activity is.
Perhaps an Aussie FReeper can give us a little more info about the area and people in it.
Not as common as they are in parts of the US - at least not in large cities. There we've got large scale natural-gas infrastructure where its piped into homes from mains supplies - people rarely rely on storages in their own homes.
It's inner Sydney, and culturally I'd probably describe it as typical Australian. The largest ethnic group is probably Anglo-Australian, followed by Asians - by which I mean, people from east Asia - Vietnam, China, etc. There's a lot of students living there as it is close to three of Australia's large universities.
Just about anybody could live there without standing out.
Big barbecues at inner city units?
