Actually, that is historically not really accurate.
Most Muslim cultures since the 19th century have used slave armies, with the Mamelukes and Jannisaries just the most famous. They tended to eventually take over the government, for obvious reasons.
There are many other examples down thru history of slaves being routinely armed, often by a noble or monarch to use against his “free” subjects.
Under Communist governments, in practice all are slaves of the State. Some of those slaves are issued arms to use against the rest of the slaves when necessary.
The direct association of freedom with bearing arms is more or less a western civ idea.

Everyone here gets the idea that ‘Free men are armed and _________ fill in the blank (slaves, serfs, oppressed people, etc.), are NOT’.
