Scandal: The IRS descends into criminal enterprise, with word of a 26-month gap of lost emails from the very period it was illegally targeting Tea Party groups. Computer crash? Try obstruction of justice.
Just as the claim that President Nixon's secretary, Rose Mary Woods, inadvertently hit the "erase" button instead of "pause" gave impetus to the drive to impeach Nixon, so too should the IRS announcement that it can't find two years of Lois Lerner's emails lead to a criminal investigation of this administration and creation of a select committee.
In April we wrote, "Lois Lerner Should Go To Jail." We think so now more than ever and also that she shouldn't be the only one to be measured for an orange jumpsuit. As in Watergate, this fish rots from the head.
We are reminded how, during his Arizona State University commencement speech in 2009, President Obama noted that ASU had refused to grant him an honorary degree and "joked" that "President (Michael) Crowe and the Board of Regents will soon learn all about being audited by the IRS."
The joke was not funny then and is less funny now. It was a predictor of administration behavior. Lerner's knowledge of and participation in planning to use the IRS as a political weapon, in coordination with the White House, is why she twice invoked the Fifth Amendment in her congressional visits, even as she was cooperating or is it coordinating? with Eric Holder's Justice Department.

And the Washington Post yawns.
Your audit is in the mail, subversive teaparty terrorist.
We need to quit dragging Nixon’s name through the mud with these rediculous comparisons.
The NSA will have them AND they are still on her computer...don’t buy her lie for one second. Call your elected and demand Lois Lerner pay for her crimes regardless of who ordered her to track and delay conservatives....obviously the lost emails finger Obama.
The reason they can get away with this is because there is a significant percentage of the population who want them to get away with it, and who don’t care whether anyone ‘on their side’ acts illegally - as long as they get what they want. They don’t want truth, because the only ‘truth’ that really matters to them is their ideological beliefs.
No comparison.
Did no one go into the IRS office and CONFISCATE ALL COMPUTERS, SOFTWARE, ETC? This should have been done at the very beginning of the investigation...THis isn’t brain surgery...
In all due respect to IBD, bringing Richard M Nixon into this or any other modern Democratic scandal serves no useful purpose.
How many people even remember him? How many people know very much objective information about Nixon? Relatively few.
Richard Nixon was a choir boy compared to the corruption going on today. No comparison whatsoever. At least RMN was not a subversive.
Let Nixon rest in peace.
The most noticeable difference as far as I can see is that Nixon acted out of panic that he’d been caught, Obama is acting out of arrogance because he doesn’t think anyone will dare do anything.
Lots of Nixon’s men went to prison. The same will happen to these IRS goons. Maybe it is the same in some ways...
Obama has learned from Nixon; recall the Nixon tapes helped to destroy him, Obama didn’t make the same mistake.
If these same “missing” emails were a threat against POTUS OR an attack against a queer, they would be “found” in an instant.
“Lots of Nixons men went to prison. The same will happen to these IRS goons. Maybe it is the same in some ways...”
Sounds great but who will prosecute? Holder, I think not. The only chance is if the pubbies grow a spine and regain power, even that scenario would be questionable.
Where is Archie Cox when we NEED Him?????????????
Issa et al need to quit being back on their heels and go on the attack.
While your points are valid, there is an advantage to using Nixon comparisons. To the left...especially the media, the word ‘Nixon’ evokes corruption...and the victory of investigative journalism over that corruption.
So, using a comparison to Nixon challenges the media: “Hey, you cared a lot about 18 minutes, how about you check into two years of lost information.”
Sure, its childish (and unfair to Nixon’s legacy)...but this is politics. Usually, one liners and slogans rule the day. Unless you expect the bulk of the sheeple to join the Heritage Foundation and start reading about current events, tactics like this are the best way to reach people.
And to date: no one has been punished for any of this. :)
I think they all are in on it. The corrupt "Two-Party Cartel" doing their usual.
