To: Trapped Behind Enemy Lines
Running for President (or even "contemplating" a run) is a great way to build yourself a big war chest of cash.

When you drop out eventually, you have a big pile of money you can use to be a player in the game. You can't just spend it on yachts and stuff, but you can dole it out in a manner that keeps you on the best guest lists and gets you invited to all the fun DC events.

That's why George Pataki ran for President three or four times.
