Some of the 60,000 Iraqi soldiers who retreated as a much smaller force of Sunni militants overran Iraq’s second largest city of Mosul last week told VICE News that they fled after being "abandoned" by their commanders.

Lincoln said, “No foreign power, by force of arms, could take a drink from the Ohio River without the help of American traitors.” He understood that if the guy in charge doesn’t do his job, or is complicit with the enemy, then no matter the power of the military it will fall. It happened in Iraq, rotten from the inside and it could happen anywhere, no matter the military might.
This makes sense since ISIS was outnumbered by the Iraqi army 40-1.
So why the dog and pony show? Top army generals dont just coincidentally decide to dissapear.

ISIS did not so much win as the entire Iraqi army simply evaporated.
The people in uniform only served to collect their salaries and not to defend the country.
Iraq’s defeat was self-inflicted.
Same thing will happen in Afghanistan .... eventually.

Well hell son, what would you have done if your Commanders had been killed? What kind of soldier are you? You need a Commander to instruct you to defend your city, your poeple?
Their inaction could have been bought with the money that ISIS stole from the banks. $450M can buy a lot of officers who earn $100/mo. Once you remove commanders at the middle level, what can the generals in Baghdad do if nobody answers the phone in Mosul?
ISIS couldn't rob the banks without silent approval of the officers, and the officers couldn't rob the banks themselves. But when they cooperated they could do it all. How convenient.
They folded when we attacked them, why would they be any different?

We have the same problem in the US Armed Forces senior leadership - no senior officer offered any resistance to Obama in leaving Americans to die in Benghazi. They wanted to keep their jobs, not do what is right. Nobody resigned.
No senior officer offered any resistance to Obama in his social engineering of the US Armed services, or Afghanistan policy.....
We have a senior officer corps whose behavior is indistinguishable from these cowards.

Yes, they do. Islamic military forces have often confounded Western military instructors by sabotaging efforts to train the lower ranks to perform the combat duties of any senior ranks. Officers typically will hide the training manuals to force the non-commissioned officers to rely upon the officer for even the most trivial details in the technical manuals for maintain weapons systems. the officers do this to hold and exercise power and prestige over the lower ranks. Efforts by Western instructors to bypass the officer causes the officer to lose face, so the officer becomes even more hostile and uncooperative with the Western instructors. All too often the Islamic officer neglects the lower ranks and leaves the unit to socialize with the higher ranking officers and win favor with the senior ranks, leaving the subordinate ranks incapable of performing their duties in the absence of the officer holding all of the information and authority necessary to accomplish their tasks.
When the unit is engaged in combat, the officer abandons the unit and fless, leaving the subordinates without the officer’s authority to do whatever needs to be done and without the ability to risk the wrath of any senior officers they may attempt to contact for orders. This leads to the disintegration of a unit when their officers abandon the unit or become casualties.
The Quds Force commander from Iran struck a deal with their religious brethren and the Kurds to let them through!
