Epithelium is the histologic term for the tissue lining or covering an organ or structure. The vagina is lined with stratified squamous epithelium, well suited for repeated external friction. Skin is also covered by stratified squamous epithelium.
The rectal canal is lined with simple columnar epithelium. This fragile type is capable of mucous secretion to facilitate evacuation. When damaged (easily with repeated friction), a pathway is created for the entry of micro-organisms to the vascular system.
