Clinton: Don’t provide military aid to Iraq

Hillary Clinton on Thursday said the U.S. shouldn’t provide military assistance to Iraq despite the threat from an Islamist militant group that has captured major cities. [READ MORE]

“I agree with the White House’s rejection and reluctance to do the kind of military activities that the Maliki government is requesting, mainly the fighter aircraft to provide close support for the army and also to go after targets,” the former secretary of State said on BBC’s “Newsnight.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki reportedly asked the Obama administration to launch airstrikes against militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The group, with ties to al Qaeda, has seized control of a swath of the Middle East including part of Syria through central Iraq. The White House, however, has so far refused to provide direct military help, even with a number of lawmakers calling on Obama to launch airstrikes as ISIS advances toward Baghdad.

Obama said Thursday that he is considering all options, but administration officials ruled out troops on the ground.

Clinton said that al-Maliki must step up and defuse sectarian tensions by creating a broader governing coalition.

“That is not a role for the United States,” Clinton said. “There needs to be a number of steps that Maliki and his government must take to demonstrate that he’s committed to an inclusive Iraq — something he has not done up to date.”

Al-Maliki must demonstrate that he is a leader for all Iraqis, and “not just a sectarian slice of the country,” she added.

Clinton also said that sending U.S. ground forces back to Iraq “is not going to happen.” But added she would “never say never, the world is unpredictable ... but not in any foreseeable future.”

Clinton, the Democratic front-runner for president in 2016 if she runs, called her vote for the Iraq War a “mistake” in her new memoir Hard Choices.

“I deeply regret the consequences,” she said.

If all it’ll cost is a few bombing runs to keep AQ at bay, why not? Agree to Maliki’s terms under the provision we get a huge sum of cash plus an agreement not to prosecute if we sty in the are.

I would go with that, but 2 trillion would be the price tag. That is what it cost to have both wars so I will charge him for both anyway. Also, we still haven’t gotten a free drop of oil that we were supposed to get from those folks. Free gas for every American for life would be a good start.

Gee, if only she’d demand her King Obama do the same

Wonder why they do not have the same attitude with the illegal kids on the border. Let them kill each other and whoever is remaining we can deal with. Sounds neat and clean.

Yep. $10/gallon gas in the U.S. isn’t bad enough.. That money will be funding Al Qaeda.

Sure, let us let all of the nations, one by one, turn into Islamist strongholds. Idiots.

And yet it was her husband's administration that wrote the ILA (Iraqi Liberation Act) which was the basis for Bush going to war in Iraq and EVERY Clinton official in the 90's said Saddam's WMD were a threat.

She's a LIAR!

uh, like wouldn’t his defending all Iraqis from slaughtering savages be an example of that? Last I heard he was worried about defending Baghdad and all Iraqis not just shia. Where were you on this date in Washington when obama met al Maliki and schmoozed together?

Perhaps so. But if they try to screw with us again, IT WILL BE BURNING FROM BORDER TO BORDER!

Here’s MY plan from before 2009 and PROBABLY the one the few remaining sane American citizens – assuming there ARE ANY – should have implemented decades ago!
NOT ONE MORE DIME AND NOT ONE MORE DROP OF AMERICAN BLOOD!!
NOTICE TO ALL CITIZENS OF IRAQ

“What difference would it make?” reiterated the brain-damaged, bottle-blonde drunk.

“By the end of Obama’s reign of terror, there will be an oil rich country totally controlled by Al Qaeda”

And it’s next door neighbor will have unfettered access to nukes.

Nope, nothing to see here. Move along.

If ISIS takes over Iraq, it will be a catastrophe. Remember the morale and prestige boost the Mujahadeen got out of chasing the Soviets from Afghanistan?

If ISIS can make the claim that it collapsed the US-installed regime in Baghdad, followed by the collapse of Aghanistan in a couple of years (if not sooner), the Salafist gain will be incalculable.

At least, though, the USofA will not collapse in the aftermath like the USSR fell apart after being chased out of Afghanistan.

If individual Americans want to pick a side between the Shiites and the Sunnis, I have no objection. Send them all of your money if you want. Write them a check. They'll be glad to have it.

If either side of this religious/tribal war thinks it can govern Iraq without the other side causing trouble, I say good luck.
