This is why Boehner stacked the leadership chain of command (including the committee chairmen) with moderates, to avoid what happened in the late 80’s when Gingrich became whip and was then thrust into the Speakership when Michael retired and the republicans took the House.
They assured themselves that a moderate will always be in charge. But the Whip race is important. We need a conservative Whip to undermine Boehner and McCarthy if necessary, or to whip conservative votes against liberal policy.

Agreed... I think the House Speaker and Majority Whip are two highly influential posts for which conservatives can and should fight.
