I think Johnny Cash did the song so much better than 9 Inch Nails. The writer of the song, a member of 9 inch nails, was at first very angry about Cash doing the song. But, once he heard it, he changed his mind. 9 Inch Nails did not do justice to the song. Cash changed the progression of the song from a minor cord to a minor 7th. It changes the entire mood of the song. In Johnny’s video, I found it so powerful as it became stronger and stronger and louder as the song progressed. The message was profound and true…..”everything in the end goes away”. It is without doubt one of my favorite songs of Johnny and one of my all time favorites. I think Johnny had worked out his flaws and come to terms with God before he died. His wife was a driving force for his coming to see things as they are.
