Opinion: Bush, Cheney created the Iraq mess; why not make them try to fix it?
Los Angeles Times ^ | June 12, 2014 | by PAUL WHITEFIELD

Well, gee, $1 trillion or so just doesn’t buy what it used to. Take Iraq, for example.

Or, should I say: Take Iraq, please, someone — and fix it. Fend off the nasty Islamic fighters of ISIS and keep that miserable sinkhole for American lives and money from coming back to bite us — again.

Do you understand now, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, John Bolton and all you neocon nutjobs, why the invasion of Iraq in 2003 wasn’t a very good idea?

President Obama sure does. Because now he’s neck deep in another crisis in this place, a country he thought he had gotten us out of, as he promised to do.

Now, I do have one somewhat off-the-wall option: Send Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney over there and let them try to negotiate a solution. And tell them they can’t come home until they’re successful. After all, they’re the ones who created this mess in the first place.

Paul, you guys were warned about this. In detail. And you ignored it. You now look really stupid complaining.

We’ve spent $1 trillion on welfare programs and have bought illegitimacy, drugs, crime and sloth.

Lefties are quote myopic in their fiscal responsibility.

many of us predicted it right here on FreeRepublic way back in 2003

I'm claiming credit for predicting it on 9/13/2001.

Sure. Why not? It’s so simple a caveman can do it.

Unfortunately having a caveman level of compassion, honor, skill, and competency is quite the reach for beltway set right now.

Well done.

Those were such dark days.

Can't believe almost 13 years have passed already.

I’m not the one being ridiculous. The insurgency was defeated.

“and many of us predicted it right here on FreeRepublic way back in 2003”

Speaking as someone who was being shot at over Iraq regularly in the 1999-2001 time frame, I figured we needed to do something about Iraq. The problem was that America & GWB wanted to do it on the cheap and do a little nation building, instead of committing to the effort it would take.

You forgot...

I ran out of gas! I...I had a flat tire! I didn’t have enough money for cab fare! My tux didn’t come back from the cleaners! An old friend came in from out of town! Someone stole my car! There was an earthquake! A terrible flood! Locusts! IT WASN’T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD!

Oh, brother. Some people do live in their own little fantasy worlds, don't they?

Let's see - when Bush and Cheney left office, (1) the insurgency was defeated, (2) a new elected government was in office, (3) Iran had backed off its support of al Sadr, (4) the Iraqi army was being rebuilt and was active and successful in protecting its territory, and (5) the U.S. had field troops still in place sufficient to deter invasion. It's six years later. None of the above is true any longer.

Yeah, it's Bush's fault. Right.

I am a little amused to hear so many support Saddam as tough on radical Islam. He was nothing of the sort, he was a co-conspirator who ran camps for them at Salman Pak and Ramadi. He was never "our bastard" or he'd still be there.

Moron. Throw a war .... then blame the guy who won it.

These people are such scum. How can they stand themselves?

This is what passes for journalism at the LA Times? It has the tenor of an angry 11th grader posting on DU.

To their credit, Bush and Cheney did try to fix it. Almost completed it, but then had to do a handoff to an incompetent.

Disagree. Obama wasn't so much incompetent as treacherous. He threw this war, planning his "I told you so" speech for years on end and fine-tuning his Marxist-Leninist rhetoric.

It isn't "suicide" if somebody cuts you down from behind.

You have a point. Obama probably did do it on purpose.

What many do not seem to understand is, “It is better to fight terror on their soil then allow it to drift closer and closer to ours.” Delaying it even for a few years is well worth the investment. It is one of three reasons/which which give purpose and proper intent for/to the Federal government. I do not think many that complain about the cost would like it if Americans were dealing with bombings every other week on our soil. Money well spent and the incompetency of the last 6 years is trying to rewrite history, meanwhile it has squandered the enormous investment taken in/to keeping America safe.
