As conservatives begin to wrap their heads around the shocking primary defeat of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, at least one member of the coup to unseat Speaker John A. Boehner doesnt think an open spot in leadership will strengthen Boehners hand come the 114th Congress.
Just minutes after Cantors defeat was official on Tuesday night, Rep. Tim Huelskamp told CQ Roll Call that Cantors ouster bodes well for an entire new leadership team.
The Kansas Republican, who hasnt been quiet about his qualms with leadership, said its too early to tell exactly how this affects leadership races, but, again, I think its a team approach, and this reflects on John Boehner, this reflects on [Majority Whip] Kevin McCarthy.
McCarthy is next in succession for the majority leader spot, but many in the Capitol see his power largely tied to Cantors.
By tomorrow, itll be McCarthy running for majority leader, Huelskamp said. Hes Mr. Ambition. But at the end of the day, I dont think he gets to be majority leader by Eric Cantor getting beat.
But if McCarthy doesnt get the title, that spot would be open for another member, perhaps a more conservative lawmaker who could align himself or herself with Boehner but still satiate the right-wing thirst for more conservative leadership.
Asked if he thought conservatives would be placated by a scenario like that, Huelskamp was unequivocal.
Absolutely not, he said. I think most members of the House know the final power rests in the speakers office.
I think it weakens the speaker; it doesnt help him, he added.
Earlier in the day, Huelskamp had predicted that Boehner wouldnt run to be speaker in the 114th Congress, along with Reps. Raúl R. Labrador, R-Idaho, and Matt Salmon, R-Ariz.
How this affects their predictions in unclear. But for Huelskamp, he think it strengthens the chances of Boehner retiring.
Huelskamp insisted Cantors loss was a reflection of the entire team.
Eric Cantor is gone because the tea party is not dead, Huelskamp said.
"There's no doubt in my mind" that Boehner will run for a third term as speaker in the next Congress, Tiberi said.

Huelskamp needs to keep swinging thay bat at the establishment. Lets take them all out of leadership!
See post #2....out of the Cincinnati paper — Boehner’s hometown paper. (We’re not allowed to post Gannett articles on FR)
and now is the time to oust him... if he won't step aside, let him go out in defeat... no more Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy... House Republicans, especially conservatives, need to cut this guy off...
Cantor was in the unfortunate position of in effect being a stand-in and a d useful symbol for Boehner. He was the first to come up and present himself in a Primary “to be voted on”, and he took the fall for the “unreachable” Boehner. Don’t expect much difference in attitude from Boehner, though....that’ll take some more dramatic GOP-E losses.
Salmon and Labrador are weak on immigration.
Gosar is moderate enough to be leader. He is best on immigration and not a bomb thrower like Franks.
Huelskamp and SoS Kobach have RINO primary challengers.
Is it possible for Boehner to be weaker?
I guess if he runs out of Kleenex, he could be, but really?
It probably will. I think Boehner was comfortable with the idea of a Speaker Cantor. I think he was going to run this fall just to win and show that he wasn't being forced out of office, then retire early in his next term and turn the reins over to Boehner. Now I think he'll run for Speaker again because there is no clear succession plan and he'd rather stay than see some people win the spot.
I do not see how he can survive an election in a newly constituted House of Reps.
The best thing he can do is not run, retire in a few months, and give the republican governor of Ohio a chance to appoint a republican to fill the seat for the requisite time before a special or general election.
Because the majority of the Republicans in the House are GOPe. Since the speaker has to be elected with an absolute majority of all members voting then your scenario could wind up with a situation where the GOP splits their vote and the Dems all vote for Pelosi so nobody wins. That could go on until either GOPe cross over and vote for Pelosi or, more likely, Dems do a deal with Boehner and then cross over and vote for him. I can only imagine what they would extract from Boehner for a promise like that.

It's a House seat not a Senate seat. Vacant House seats remain vacant until a special election is held.
RINOS beware, you are not welcome anymore. Are you listening, Chris Christie?
Who's running against Kobach in the KS Primary?
Someone named Morgan. Says voting is a right. Doesn’t like Kobach spending his weekends attacking Obama’s lawlessness instead of playing golf.
Are you sure that Morgan is a Republican running against Kobach in the GOP Primary in Aug?
The RINO candidates are Cantoriffic in KS. They are unbelievably liberal.
The facebook page of one of the Huelskamp challengers is too disgusting to even post. It is just Boehner Boehner Boehner.
