I saw an interesting documentary on Schizophrenia which showed abnormal structural elements in the brain. These abnormalities are like someone born without hands. People with Schizophrenia have voices telling them horrific messages that they have no way of telling if they are real or imaginary. These people have the potential for dangerous behavior. The science is trying to compensate for the brain’s structural deficiencies through drugs that substitute brain function. The only problem is that no drug will fix what is structurally not there in the brain—just as no drug will substitute for a missing hand. I don’t know enough about it, but I suspect the drug companies may not be selling the appropriate remedy. It may be that stem cell technology is what is needed to grow the abnormally developed parts in the brain.
In the mean time, these abnormal people are a danger to themselves and society and cannot be mainstreamed in society. A caring society with Christian values would treat these individuals with compassion and care for them. Instead we will experience the bad results as we wait for the science to bring real remedies. Maybe science will find the root cause of Schizophrenia and create a preventative measure.
