Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) offered his sympathies to Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) in a brief statement late Tuesday after his top lieutenant was defeated in a stunning primary loss.
Eric Cantor and I have been through a lot together, Boehner said in a statement that read like a condolence note. Hes a good friend and a great leader, and someone Ive come to rely upon on a daily basis as we make the tough choices that come with governing. My thoughts are with him and Diana and their kids tonight. Boehner and Cantor have worked closely together in the last two years after a tense period in the first year of Boehners tenure as Speaker.
Cantor was seen as Boehners heir apparent, and his loss will shake up the line succession in the House GOP ranks.
In a shocking upset, Cantor was defeated, 56 percent to 44 percent, by conservative David Brat, a Tea Party-aligned college professor with no experience in elected office.
Did he cry?
Boehner will now have to offer the Tea Party an acceptable replacement for Cantor , most likely Jeb Hensarling, and plum assignments to try to save his job.
I think if he offers anything less he will lose. And that might not be enough.
This is a HUGE victory.
It can be anyone. One does not have to be a House member to be Speaker. How about Dick Cheney? Or Rush Limbaugh? That would drive the Democrats absolutely nuts.
GOPe Unity means conservatives surrender.
Bonehead and McCarthy will be a goner in the future, as well.
Conservatives in the house smell blood in the water.
You can bet the GOPe are already plotting how to either have the Dem beat Brat or how to bring Brat into line.
Hopefully Brat’s a Cruz who won’t be co-opted.
I’m in..., one day is more than enough time to take of all those issues...!

John Boehner just walked up to the restaurant to mine. Do I ask him how he feels about losing Cantor? #HardChoices 7:42 PM - 10 Jun 2014

Boehner silent on Cantor. "Oh you all know what the rules are," he says to reporters outside the restaurant before closing the car door. 9:32 PM - 10 Jun 2014
If all goes well, after the Benghazi select, we should have Gowdy as SOH.
Yup. Thanks.
The Federal Politicians blew it by not enforcing their own laws, so it is time, - - - time for a change.
I hope that the weeping liberal bonehead is the next to be voted out of office!
Obviously this is a shock to the kids they will never recover from. They’re not automatic members of the oligarchy anymore.
gowdy has already said clearly he does not nor will have any interest in being speaker.
quietly a lot of support is coalescing around jeb hensarling of texas.
My thoughts are with him and Diana and their kids tonight.
Love it Grae W.
I would add “go to Disney World” ...
Well said, Viennacon.
I’m so sick of all these larcenous unprincipled Grifters hugging & spooning each other....
