RICHMOND, Va. Dave Brat, a local economics professor, toppled House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on Tuesday night in the most shocking primary defeat since Republicans took the House in 2010.
The conservative challengers victory halts one of the most meteoric rises in national politics, and illustrates the strong anti-incumbent fever that has taken over Cantors Richmond-area district. Cantor is the second House incumbent to lose this primary season Texas GOP incumbent Ralph Hall was defeated by a tea-party backed challenger at the end of May.
Cantors defeat not only reorders Virginia politics, where Cantor was the highest-ranking Republican, but it completely throws the House Republican leadership into flux. Cantor, 51, was long seen as the next speaker of the House after John Boehner retires.

Britt Hume doubling down on his amnesty stance. I can’t believe this buffoon...
Dr. Brat on phone with Hannity now.
It’s embarrassing, actually.
HUGS!!!
You know what this lovefest needs? Ponies ;)
Brat is smokin’ the GOPe
The important thing is that the liberal republican got fired.
My mission is to politically destroy liberal republicans at every opportunity, primary or general, until trying to run as a liberal republican is a political kiss of death.

Could be.
And my mission is to make sure Nancy Pelosi never becomes Speaker again in my lifetime.
We obviously have different goals.
The Democrats aren't going to throw the kitchen sink into one congressional seat (there is no chance of they're gaining control of the House this year). Meanwhile, they have at least half a dozen Senate seats in serious danger, and Senate control *is* up for grabs this time.
I really wish they would throw a bunch of money at this R+10 district, shifting those funds from their Senate races. Unfortunately, they are more shrewd in spending their own money than they are in spending mine.
Last day to file to run as an independent was today. So that avenue is closed to the weasel. I think write in is still theoretically possible, but extremely unusual in VA. It wasn’t strictly national politics that cooked the weasel. He was looked upon as aloof in his newly drawn district. There was no great love for him and Dave Brat won as a result.
Did I hear Hume correctly? “Personally I support immigration reform.”
Surprise us again, Brit. /S
Effectively yes. Last day to file as an independent was today.
Too bad he can't run in 2016.
LOL
It’s a safe gop seat and a generally very conservative district. Absent a “found in bed with a dead boy” incident, the gop candidate will win.
It does no good to have liberal republican leadership in either house. It does not advance conservative causes. It advances liberal causes, like amnesty.
I will politically destroy every liberal republican candidate that I can, until running as a liberal is a political kiss of death.
You have been warned. Run a liberal republican candidate, and prepare to lose.
/johnny
Yes, I heard that, too. He and Megyn then snarked about "however you want to define Amnesty". Blechh.
The example of what Texas has done to expel the opportunist yellow dog Democrats/Republicans from our midst is important for all to understand. Dewhurst was like Obama, he convinced the electorate that he was something that he was not. Cantor and Dewhurst thought that they could ignore the ordinary people to voted them into office. They were both wrong.
