RICHMOND, Va. Dave Brat, a local economics professor, toppled House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on Tuesday night in the most shocking primary defeat since Republicans took the House in 2010.
The conservative challengers victory halts one of the most meteoric rises in national politics, and illustrates the strong anti-incumbent fever that has taken over Cantors Richmond-area district. Cantor is the second House incumbent to lose this primary season Texas GOP incumbent Ralph Hall was defeated by a tea-party backed challenger at the end of May.
Cantors defeat not only reorders Virginia politics, where Cantor was the highest-ranking Republican, but it completely throws the House Republican leadership into flux. Cantor, 51, was long seen as the next speaker of the House after John Boehner retires.

If you want to think it was democrats that voted in Brat, go ahead.
What percentage of his vote were they, he won by more than 11 points, were the democrat voters like 12% or 22%, 32% of the vote?
Most VA conservatives are dancing a jig right now.
Ding dong the weasels gone! The weasels gone! The weasels gone! Ding dong the wicked weasels gone!
Just asking: Could Dems vote in this primary?
Can anyone post that photo of the illegall day workers grabbing their crotch and flipping the bird?
Seems appropriate for Eric today.
I was told No
Remember, politics is about power, don’t expect politicians to respond to anything but. What we are seeing tonight is power, pure and simple. Cantor forget that. Other politicians will not make the same mistake.
The other lesson to take from this is that results come not from empty rhetoric about what ought to be, it’s about delivering results at the ballot box. What happens in local races resonates across the country when it is done at the right place and at the right time.
This will be a sleepless night for many career politicians. I will sleep like a baby.
Yes, it was an open primary.
“Cantor Loses by 7000 Votes”, does not a November win for Brat make. Please be realistic and brace yourselves.
We are not the only ones celebrating tonight.
I can hear the Founding Fathers of this great Country...
Yup. Power is taken. It is wielded. It isn’t negotiated for, bargained with or ‘lesser eviled’ into position.
And if unused, it disappears.
Everyone got caught off guard. I knew folks in his district were pissed, and I thought it would be closer than the pols and pundits were saying. But no way I thought he’d blow the weasel out of the water.
Amen
Not Mark Levin!! It was the power of Virginians!!!!!!!
Does this mean Kevin McCarthy becomes House Majority Leader?
Yes, it was an open primary.
And the Dems who voted, voted for Cantor.

Brat is articulate and seems to be a fighter. No way I would have predicted a win. I thought it would be close. Maybe even a nail biter. Not a blowout.
It took years to get rid of Dewhurst, but he's finally gone.
