You saw the horse running against other horses who had no stake in the game.

You saw owners who deliberately bypassed the Preakness so their horses would be ‘rested’ for the Belmont.

How is that a ‘triple’ crown competition? How many horses in that race were actually in the previous two races? How can a race be a ‘triple’ if the horses running in it, didn’t run in the previous two?

How is that a ‘triple’ crown competition?

The "triple crown" is a made up competition. There were and are the three big races excluding the west. They run in five weeks. Someone described the feat of winning them all as a "triple crown" and it caught on with writers and the public.

It's really three races and there is no sense, fairness, rules or logic to the "triple crown" because it is not a race, It is something to sell newspapers.
