There is no evidence that any of the soldiers who walked off post were charged with any form of desertion or intended to join the enemy. All were disciplined in various ways, the military sources said.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't you have to be gone for a period of time before you can be charged with desertion? Most of these look like they were only for a day or so.

AWOL - up to 30 days.

Desertion - more than 30 AWOL or missing movement in a combat zone.
