To me, the situation reads like this: He was raised by these hippy-dips who convinced him that America is the aggressor and the Taliban is some underdog misrepresented by the military-industrial complex to justify taking Afghanistan for some underground oil pipeline, or so the CIA can take over the poppy fields, or some other paranoid Chomsky-ite notion. They may have even encouraged him to join the Army and defect so as to become some liaison or spokesperson for the Taliban who would then step forward and "Tell the American people the Real Truth about blah blah blah."

Kid believes parents, goes trotting off like a good little brainwashed liberal... and spends 5 years getting to know the Taliban and realizing that everything he was raised to believe is myth. He wants nothing to do with his family, they either lied to him and used him or taught him absolute nonsense. His life is destroyed. He'll probably be court-martialed... no wonder he wants nothing to do with him.

This is all speculation, of course, but it makes sense and explains why he doesn't want to see them now.

You assume that what they’re telling us about his not wanting to speak to his parents is the truth. Why would you think anything we’re being told by “unnamed officials” is the truth?

Thank you, Seek and Find! You are spot on in my opinion. I lost another thread where someone posted an article referencing the Wikileaks dump that Taliban sort of laughing about catching Bergdahl in the crapper. The person who submitted the article quoted someone from the platoon describing a desertion, but I don’t see how that matches the Wikileaks info that followed the interview. If the philosophy was never leave a soldier behind, it sounds like 15 Taliban and some cash (initial offer right after his “capture”) was a better deal than the 5 top leaders.

I agree with your assessment, he has seen the depths of the abyss and now knows his parents are total hippie numbskulls who know nothing, have done nothing and he hates them

However, he has a chance, look what Bill Ayers made of himself, a hate filled USA stinks and is the great satan college conehead teaching hate filled claptrap to kids who pay good money for nothing
