In the 1200s the area we now know as Iraq had been a thriving center of civilization for more than 5000 continuous years.
Conquerors had come and gone, often destroying the irrigation systems necessary to a dense population. That dense population then patiently rebuilt them.
The Mongols rolled through in the 13th century, destroyed the irrigation systems, and killed pretty much everyone. The region has never really recovered.
You can also look at the Crow Creek Massacre in what is now SD, around 1325.
