An awning would not look right where that window is. I am buying solar shades for all three windows that face west. The other 2 are not that bad since there is an olive tree in front of them. The huge window is in an uncovered court yard so solar shades are the best option.

Southern exposure to the Sun is the preferred method of solar heat gain! There are homes that have a narrow room with glass the full length with a rock wall which is warmed to the rear of the windows that will provide free warmth with attaching fans with thermostatic controls for on and off position! The Sun in the Winter hangs low and bathes the solar room. Southern exposure provides Sunlight throughout the day not just East or West.
