A new study that tested the willingness of drivers to stop for people depending on their race has shown up some disconcerting conclusions. Portland State University-based Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium (OTREC) had six men - three black and three white - of similar age and build and dressed in identical 'neutral' outfits cross the same street in Portland at separate intervals. The street had a crosswalk that was not governed by traffic lights, leaving the onus to stop with the driver, according to The Huffington Post. Trained observers watched the study out of sight from the traffic and recorded how the drivers reacted to each pedestrian.
Each man crossed 15 times each, allowing for 168 drivers to unwittingly be involved in the report. The study found that drivers were less likely to stop for the black pedestrians than they were the white ones. The observers noted that black pedestrians were passed by twice as many cars as the white pedestrians, and waited 32 percent longer to cross.

Why would you want to stop for them when they have the entitlement and “I dare you” mentality who intentionally take forever to cross the street as his way to stick it to the man?
I wonder what the results would have been if the study had been done with black drivers and white jay walkers?
Silly study. There are so many confounders that it is hard to say that the difference is really race. For instance, what was the behavior of the people waiting to cross the street? Did they step boldly out and begin to walk? Did they try to make eye contact with the drivers first? Etc.
I was badly injured crossing the street after a black man stopped to wait for me. I tripped and broke my arm. He pulled his truck over and helped me to get up and stayed with me until the worst of the shock had passed. He wanted to drive me to the hospital, but I would not let him, since I thought I had already taken up too much of his time. I drove myself. And what does this story show about the race of people crossing the street? Absolutely nothing, just like this “study” shows.

Yep, the study should be re-tried in Gary Indiana. Seems to be that there is a need to adjust conclusions for local cultures and be careful not to extrapolate results over the entire country.

Lets be honest. Disruptive jaywalking is a taunt and dare routine practiced with gusto among African Americans.
In Memphis they are the ones most likely to be driving on suspended licenses for DUI, don’t carry even basic car ins. We have 1 city councilwoman, janice fullilove...sh’t. who drives on a suspended license for DUI in Mississippi got caught coming home drunk by MS PD. They held her license. She applied for a lost license in TN, which is another crime. She was caught again while still under suspension. I was just doing God’s work delivering Meals on Wheels was her excuse. Never spent a day in jail for any of the crimes she committed, still sits on the Memphis City Council. The IDIOTS in her district will vote her back in. They don’t care she is a danger to them or others.
Has this article taken into account the proportion of blacks crossing the street where they feel like it compared to everybody else?
If some guy walks in front of me when I’m driving, I may not have the ability to stop even if I wanted to.
Did they do the other side of this study? How many blacks crossing the street purposely slow down to make white drivers stop?
I don’t think anyone wants to hit someone. It usually does a lot of damage to your car. I think the study is dumb, but it is Portland.

Yep ... this is definitely a big problem. I heard that in Pennsylvania you can buy a special rider on your car insurance whereby you are not charged points for running over black people.
It's the white paint. If the whole city wasn't racist, they'd use black paint on the crosswalks.

What color were the drivers? This is so stupid.
The way this reads to me, it has nothing to do with jaywalking.
You have a crosswalk that is not at a light. You have a pedestrian waiting at that crosswalk for traffic to pause and let him cross the street.
Motorists tended to stop more for white pedestrians.
