What happens if Cochrane decides to forgoe the runoff and just drops out? Does one still need to be held?

Given how badly and publically he’s messed up over the last few weeks, casting doubt on his ability to run a successful general election campaign (not to mention actually being effective for another six years as Senator) that would seem the right and honorable thing to do.

You’re correct. If Cochran concedes, there will be no runoff.

I’m guessing not, since the primary narrowed the race down to only 2.
