At one time I'd have been outraged at an attack on a cop. But the way the cops have been behaving lately, I could almost sympathize with the attacker. To paraphrase H. L. Mencken, at some point in every man's life he wants to spit on his hands, raise the Jolly Roger, and start slitting throats.

Apparently it was the sob story: she was a happily married nurse with three children, she got addicted to painkillers, her marriage collapsed, she lost custody of her children, and wound up out on the street, doing things for heroin she never thought she would do. She could be your sister, your daughter, your aunt, yada, yada, yada.
