The city of Chicago has filed a lawsuit against five pharmaceutical manufacturers, accusing the companies of deceptively marketing addictive painkillers.
The lawsuit against five of the nations largest opioid manufacturersPurdue Pharma, Cephalon, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Endo Health Solutions, and Actaviswas filed in state court, according to a statement from the mayors office.
The suit alleges the companies misrepresented the benefits of opioids while concealing the serious health risks associated with highly addictive narcotics painkillers, according to the statement. The suit claims the companies target marketing to the elderly and veterans, promising the drugs would improve their quality of life.
The citys Health Insurance Plan has reimbursed claims for approximately $9.5 million on opioids since 2008, according to the statement.
We believe that these pharmaceutical manufacturers have violated a number of city ordinances and other laws in the marketing and sale of these drugs, corporation counsel Stephen Patton said in the statement.
The purpose of the lawsuit is simple: to stop this deceptive and unlawful marketing and hold these companies responsible for the harm their deception has caused, Patton said.
Brave New World
tyranny will thrive when drug are commonly used
The purpose of this suit is to extort money. All the other AG’s in the country will then pile on. The cost of drugs will go up to cover it. This is to subsidize more government.
This is about the prescription drug claim payouts. If they insist on pursuing this they may find themselves in trouble with the Feds, as it could be claimed they are discriminating against a protected class in certain instances when it comes to whom the prescription was written for. Example a city worker retired on disability because of a work related injury who is now in chronic pain.
If that were true, how do you explain the early to mid twentieth century. Grand pappy was stoned out of his mind, grandma was a speed freak, and there was no war on some drugs. The greatest generation of stoners and addicts. Opiates, speed, combinations of the two were heavily prescribed and readily available. Just look at drug history in this country for a glimpse. I could list what was available but I don’t spoon feed adults. If you want the truth, look it up.
Do you really think the tyrants of today care if drugs are legal or not? I don’t
Did they sue to cure their addiction to corruption and spending?
