Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar has issued a rare public statement hailing the exchange of five Guantanamo Bay detainees for a Taliban-held US soldier as a "big victory".
Sgt Bowe Bergdahl, 28, was handed to US forces in Afghanistan on Saturday.
US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has defended the exchange amid criticism Congress was not given 30 days' notice before the detainees were released.
He said the US had to act quickly to save the soldier's life.
Sgt Bergdahl, who is said to be in good condition and has been flown to Germany for more treatment, was the only US soldier being held by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire Afghan Muslim nation," said Mullah Omar, who has made no public appearances or speeches since fleeing Afghanistan in 2001 when US-led forces toppled the Taliban after the 9/11 attacks in the US.

You forgot to mention his war to turn American citizens into subjects. I have never seen a period in american history where the Government was in such a transparent war against its own citizenry.

Who made the claim to Obama that Sgt. Bergdahl’s life was in danger unless he released five Taliban terrorists ‘’quickly’’? It was the Taliban themselves.
So now, every time the Taliban want more of their terrorists released from Guantanamo, all they’ll have to do is capture an American soldier and make another phone call to Obama about the soldier’s imminent danger, and voila, more terrorists will be released until Guantanamo is empty.
This is a cover for something else. This guy was one of them,I think. This story in contrived.
as soon as those terrorists touch the ground they are enemy combatants again and can and should be targeted by a drone.
There is a huge problem giving up 5 senior jihadists (who will return to duty, killing Americans and training others how to do the task) to get back a treasonous anti American deserter.
Obama? Yep! IS the Taliban in the White House.
He should be tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail.

This prisoner exchange will embolden the Taliban to kidnap more Americans.
It is so discouraging to ‘soldier on’ when the Republican-held House does nothing to impeach this traitor(Obama).I am beginning to believe that even if the Senate flips to Republican control, still nothing will be done to remove this traitor from office.

This whole thing seems like a collusive setup; from the way he walked away from his post, leaving his gun and kit, his emails saying he was ashamed to be an American, the report that he was training the Taliban in ambush techniques and bomb making, his father giving thanks in Arabic, and the exchange of five high ranking Taliban from Gitmo for this probable deserter. This seems like a deal cooked up between Obama and his advisors and the terrorist leadership.
