A coal-fired plant's CO2 emissions are approximately double that of a gas-fired plant. Sequestration/capture is very expensive, as the article points out. However, CO2 is just a global warming issue, which we agree is a red herring. A modern coal plant removes the harmful gases and particulates from the flue gas: N2, H2O, O2, NOx, SOx and fly ash. CO2 sequestration/capture has no environmental value and no economic value other than for petroleum extraction. I have been unable to find data on the cost per MW of capacity of a new coal-fired plant that removes these gases and particulates, but does not sequester/capture CO2.

Absent the global warming scare about CO2, a new coal-fired plant, which removes all emissions harmful to health, has a lower cost per KWH of output than a new gas-fired plant.

There is therefore no rationale for the about-to-be-proposed EPA regulations. If implemented, they should be removed by a future Republican administration.
