Except that for 20th-21st century Muslims, a "martyr" (shahid of shaheed) is a person who loses his life
while murdering a whole bunch of other people, including innocent ones. In fact, I've read that if a Muslim "fighting in the way of Allah" (for the advancement of Islam) dies in his bloody assault and kills a bunch of Muslim bystanders simultaneously, the Muslim "collateral damage" people are also considered shahids, that is, they are honored as fortunate and assured of Paradise.
So they're not particularly scrupulous about "collateral damage," even if the people they kill are their own.
Thus --- at least in our lifetime --- "martyr" to Muslims has acquired an almost opposite meaning that the word as applied by Christians.
In the Catholic Church, for instance, a person cannot be honored with the title of "martyr" if he died "in possession of arms."
