In many jurisdictions you can count yourself lucky if the police respond within an hour (or at all!) to a burglar alarm.
I guess it's different if there is a dog to shoot.

****Important!!!****
I'm starting a new job Monday. This will impact my ability to quickly ping to this list. Don't worry if I don't promptly ping list to an article you've told me about. I'll get there. Eventually.

I will post a large sign in my kitchen.
DEAR OFFICER,
To get the best and clearest shot to kill my dog, please get the treats from above the stove in the kitchen. You will find that my dog has been trained to sit nicely waiting for the treat, enabling you to get the best shot at him.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Yours,
Laz

There should be a stand your ground law for dogs who are defending their owner's home.

Do not call 911, do not call the police, do not set up alarms that the police can respond to. The police are not your friend, THEY ARE THE ENEMY!

This is in my neck of the woods, and no, Texas is hardly immune from JBT syndrome. In fact it is becoming pandemic here in Travis and Williamson counties.

Round Rock is a bedroom community on Austin’s northern city limits and in Williamson County one of the most conservative counties in Texas. To say it is a “law and order” county is a gross understatement. People literally avoid restaurants and bars in WC due to very aggressive cops and DUI prosecutors!
On the dog, I guess the cops were duty bound to go in the house to see if there was a bad guy inside but I wonder why these Chiefs of Police don’t order them to Taser dogs instead of killing them. At least the dog would be alive.

For as long as I can remember semi small town cops have been relatively JBTs who are not good enough to get on with TexDPS and are like Barney on steroids with wide open Rules of Engagement by the cities mostly interested in speeding ticket revenue from LEO.

agreed.
my guess... the cop broke into the home and was in the process of disabling the alarm when the dog surprised him
check the area for home break-ins during the day where the alarms were disabled.
(i’d give this a 50-50 chance at being accurate)
