That was a memorable exchange - contrast that to the feeble "debates" we get now. We still get a lot of sound and fury, but little substance.

And as much as I disagree with Mr. Vidal, he was given a forum in the 60's and 70's, as he should have been. Today, the Leftists in our Universities and media pre-empt the opposition - that would be people like me - from having any say. They're operating straight from the Bolshevik Playbook!

After that historic exchange, Buckley sued Vidal for calling him a crypto-Nazi. Buckley won the lawsuit, but the New York jury only awarded him one dollar in damages.
