I favor the Big Space ship idea the Brits were toying with—a sort of Space plane. A sort of Flash Gordon approach to the question a bit like the Nazi “Silver Bird” design.

I would hope they have contingency’s in case all the automatic, computerized controls go down. Someone might have to pilot the critter home.

Ideally, space will be developed without government at all. I bet within a decade someone will innovate a way to eliminate space debris and make money doing it.

Looks like five portholes for the “pilot” to steer by from his prone position. CNBC reported on it today - Musk claims he will go forward with the vehicle even if doesn’t win NASA’s bid and he won’t take the company public. Vid here:

All of that is true, he will never go public with spacex. The reason is that he wants to personally go to mars. Spacex is the means to get there. Stockholders, boards of directors etc. would expect quarterly profits, short time horizons. That would interfere with the long term goals of getting to mars.

Yes, he will fund the Dragon capsule even if NASA doesn't want it, because Dragon2 is the prototype for his Mars lander.
