Theyve given John Boehner constant headaches during his three years as speaker.
Now, Boehners friends are trying to make sure that a small pocket of tea-party-aligned Republicans wont have a chance to derail his speakership next year. And if they try, they could be punished.
A group of his closest allies including fellow Ohio Republicans like Pat Tiberi are discussing tactics such as trying to change GOP Conference rules to punish members who do not support the partys nominee during a floor vote. A lawmaker who bucks the Republicans choice for speaker could lose committee assignments or worse. Boehners allies have already stripped some Republicans of their committee assignments for straying too far from the team.
In a sign of force, some of Boehners friends are considering releasing a letter with the names of several dozen GOP lawmakers pledging to vote for no one else besides the speaker making the election of a more conservative rival logistically impossible.
The effort is playing out amid ongoing speculation that Boehner may retire soon after the midterms, though the Ohio Republican insists he will stick around. And while his tenure has been defined by the tea partys fury, the maneuvering to keep him in power is a reminder of the enduring strength of the GOPs establishment wing.
Boehners critics are loud but disorganized and stand little chance of toppling him at the moment. But the talks represent a drastic shift in Boehners corner of the House Republican Conference and are, in part, a reaction to a laid-back attitude that is seen as both a strength and hobbling weakness for the speaker.

But of course! And the GOPe paid operatives are already flooding FreeRepublic with their bile, trying to corral us back into the Republican plantation. Just look at all the attacks people get when Kentucky Freepers dare voice their intention to NOT vote for old "post turtle" back stabber Mitch come November.
How have we weakened them after their re-election, when they are now nurtured by, perhaps even indebted to, the commies across the aisle?
But we’ll hold our noses and vote for (fill in the blank)
You must be my echo.
Which founding father was it who said it’s better to have the enemy say that he is the enemy on the other side than have them secretly in your midst among you?
I am butchering the quotation, but it was to that effect, so I accept your like minded point.
It beats the exasperatingly useless cannard of that, “lesser of two evils” granola. (Without the nuts of course.)
“But well hold our noses and vote for (fill in the blank)”
OR — we’ll stay home.
The voters in Boehner’s district had a chance to get rid of him, but didn’t.................
The voters in Kentucky had a chance to get rid of McTurtle, but didn’t.....................
And on and on it goes.........when is enough, enough?????
No more for me. I’ve had my fill!
I know. Surely the resistance is making progress, with issues so starkly dangerous in this age.
It’s not proven that we have the time to change the R Party direction from the inside. The media occasionally throws us a few bones that we are pulling the Party to the right, and the leadership flirts with a few of us, in some bland statement, and now Carson kindly suggests we can compromise more, but the record, the political habits and the results of the Republicans has changed nothing of consequence, stopped nothing of consequence, and reversed nothing, in EIGHT YEARS!
There's not a dimes worth of difference between 'boner' and Pelosi, IMHO.
You are assuming that our electoral process did not go Soviet and Cook County.
Machine Politics ensure that the Ruling Class can never be challenged or lose it’s power.
We used to call it tyranny at one time.
And history teaches that tyrants CANNOT be voted out of power.
There IS NO CHANGING a corrupt oligarchy from within the system they have corrupted.
The corruption ensures that there is no civil means possible to change tyranny from the inside.
Change will have to come from outside the system they have corrupted, and it will have to be imposed by force or the threat of force. Fact of history.
Why this people continue to delude themselves into thinking “just vote more Republicans” as some kind of salvation is proof that the nation has a fatal case of Normalcy Bias.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, conservatives should vote for his (D) challenger in the general election. We have enough spare R’s to keep the house, and there is no stronger message that could be sent to the RHINOs in Congress. Plus, he’s obviously not on our team when I comes down to issues.
It is looking within that realm of thought and possibilities, my FRiend.
Ayyup.
The intimidation factor is exponentially increasing. They are already convinced Obama only won because Conservatives refused to vote for the Socialist Ruling Class Stooge.
Since that worked out so well for them, they decided to double down on it.
Grimes wins that seat in November. Conservatives like me are either writing in a Conservative, voting 3rd party or staying home, and we are now making that our full-effort for November.
McConnell is toast, after declaring war on the Tea Party and vowing to "crush Conservatives wherever we find them". We would rather Grimes get that seat than support one who declared war on us and works to undermine our cause and principles.
And these derelicts claim they are anti-union...Ya right...
Common sense. Letting the 0bama GOPers run the Senate for two years is poor strategry
