Pulling off a last-minute trip to Brazil, which is hosting the World Cup for the first time since 1950, isn't impossible, but travelers will need an Amazon-size budget and expedited visa service from the Brazilian government to attend the June 12-July 13 event.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says England need to play like Liverpool if they are to have any chance of winning the World Cup.

Scholes, who won 66 England caps between 1997 and 2004, urged Roy Hodgson to have five Liverpool players in his starting XI and go for it, avoiding 'dull 0-0 draws'.

England World Cup squad profile: Joe Hart
Hart had a horrific start to the season, with his all-too-frequent gaffes dominating the backpages and causing grimaces amongst England fans as the nation’s No.1 began to unravel. Tame shots were palmed into his own net and routine catches were fumbled, before a comical mix-up with Matija Nastasic saw City lose late on to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge at the height of Hart's ineptitude.

Manuel Pellegrini was forced into action, and decided to drop Hart for deputy keeper Costel Pantilimon. “Joe needs a rest and it will be useful for him,” said the Chilean at the time. The 27-year-old spent the next seven league matches on the bench, but a run that saw Pantilimon concede six times in three matches presented Hart with a chance to return to the first team.

Slowly and surely, he has restored his reputation.

The Chilean miners who survived trapped underground longer than anyone else before have a message for their country's World Cup team: Don't fear the "group of death."

Chile has a strong squad, but in the first round it faces defending champion Spain and 2010 finalist Netherlands, as well as Australia. Just advancing out of Group B will be seen as a major success.

But for the miners who were trapped deep underground for 69 days in 2010: "Nothing is impossible for a Chilean." That's the title of their stirring television ad released Wednesday.

Brazil’s efforts to tout the benefits of hosting soccer’s World Cup to a skeptical nation have been hit by a lawsuit calling for an advertisement to be withdrawn on the basis it is “absurdly divorced from reality.”

The suit calls for the suspension of television and Internet spots that compare spending on the 12 World Cup stadiums to the amount Brazil invests in health, education and transportation. The government has also issued leaflets with the same information and other examples of how the country will benefit from staging soccer’s showpiece.

“Besides not matching reality, the contents of the advertisement reaches the collective unconscious with the subliminal message that the federal government has fulfilled all its promises,”
prosecutor Ailton Benedito said in comments published on the federal attorneys’ office website. The government’s press office wasn’t able to comment immediately.

BERLIN, May 29: Germany’s World Cup preparation has been hit by a week of turbulence in which a car crash, injuries, a scandal and a driving ban have all caused disruption.

Head coach Joachim Loew took his squad to a luxury, five-star hotel in south Tirol’s St. Leonhard for 10 days to prepare his stars for their World Cup Group G campaign, which starts on June 16 against Portugal in Salvador.

Yet a series of unfortunate incidents have left some squad members seeking the services of the team’s sports psychologist Hans-Dieter Hermann.

Defender Kevin Grosskreutz caused a scandal just before the camp started by urinating in the foyer of a Berlin hotel after the German Cup final, the same match where captain Philipp Lahm and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer picked up worrying injuries.

Could matches at Fifa World Cup 2014 be fixed?
"Everyone has a history," he says. "Teams have history, players have history, refs have history.

"We know warm-up matches were thrown in the last World Cup, so that is also useful information to help us counter things."

"We don't know yet what is wrong with Jesus. He is going to be tested and then we can give a status," coach Miguel Herrera said. "I spoke briefly with him and he said that he was fine, but we need to wait."

Why doesn’t China or India ever do anything in the World Cup? Both have gigantic populations and I assume many millions of soccer players. And unlike American football or basketball, you don’t have to be huge to excel in soccer. So why are there no Chinese or Indian superstars or great teams?

Heh, my friends are complaining that the price of concession food will be outrageous with a hot dogs and such being around $10 dollars. This type of stuff is all over the web.

Given the price of a cheeseburger in Tokyo, I could see why the Brasilians want to the Japanese to show up all the same. BRING YEN - LOL!

Thank you for the ping.

Heads up to those going to the World Cup, The Guardian published a warning for the British to watch out for Argentine gangs.

So, Americans speak English, at least most of us. We could possibly be confused for Brits, soccer hooligans or Bravados, whatever they are called may not be the sharpest.

I’m not really excited about it being held in Brazil, there are many great things about that country I’m sure but it’s got a really high crime rate.

Hope Fades in Brazil for a World Cup Economic Boost
RIO DE JANEIRO—Not too long ago, Tarcísio Monteiro was so obsessed with World Cup soccer he bought a plastic World Cup trophy for his room in a cramped Rio de Janeiro slum.

Now that Brazil is hosting the event, he has become so angry about the money being spent that he joined mass protests against it. He bought goggles for the tear gas and hung them near his trophy.

In a surprise inspection Monday, Procon said, inspectors found 25 kilograms (about 55 pounds) of expired pasta, shrimp, salmon and margarine. At Portobello, inspectors also seized 24 kilograms (about 53 pounds) of steak, sauces, beef heart, cheese, sugar and fish without expiration labels.

The official World Cup song is definitely striking a chord — the wrong one with many in host country Brazil.

Since the recent release of FIFA's "We Are One (Ole Ola)," hordes of fans in Brazil have been slamming the official 2014 Cup theme. Many expressed their frustration on Twitter under the tag #VoltaWakaWaka — a plea for the return of the widely loved song that Colombian artist Shakira performed for the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
