I say we do away with this “First Lady” business — the title and the “position.” In a republic, the presidential couple would be rightly styled “The President of the United States and Mrs. ___________,” (or Mr. ________ in the case of a female president.) Provide no funding for an office or staff except for reasonable household duties. That way we avoid co-regents like the Clintons or insufferable busy-bodies like Mrs. Obama.
I agree. Wives of presidents should be addressed as Mrs. so and so. Terms of endearment such as “first lady” are not necessary. And if wives of presidents want a office staff to assist them, the wives can pay for it themselves. Or maybe out of the loose change in the sugar bowel.
