Protesters hold anti-China placards while marching in an anti-China protest on a street in Hanoi May 11, 2014. Hundreds rallied on Sunday in Vietnam's biggest cities to denounce China's setting up of a giant oil rig in the South China Sea, a rare protest likely to prolong a tense standoff between the two communist neighbours.
Territorial tensions in Asia continue to rise.
The latest: A Chinese ship has reportedly sunk a Vietnamese boat, reports the Nikkei.
A Chinese vessel rammed and sank a Vietnamese fishing boat off the coast of Vietnam on Monday afternoon, the first sinking of a ship in the conflict over disputed waters in the South China Sea.
The state-run Tuoi Tre newspaper reported the incident online. Chinese and Vietnamese ships have clashed repeatedly since Beijing pushed ahead with the installation of an oil rig early this month in waters claimed by Hanoi.
The recent tensions have ignited major anti-China protests in Vietnam.
Protests in Vietnam started peacefully in response to China's decision to put an oil rig in disputed territory. Since then they have turned deadly.

“Dont be so sure. In their last go around, Charlie held his own. They are ancient enemies.”
You’re correct...’79 wasn’t it?
Actually, the conflicts btwn the two go back more than 2,000 years before either country was known by its current name. The two have been at war for all that time save perhaps 100 years total.
The Communists are already in control of every branch of the US government except the military....And, they're getting close to getting it too.
Is this how WW3 starts??
Such a dilemma. Which side of this do the Communists in Washington D.C. support?
Oh well...
Yeah, I can see that going over like the proverbial lead balloon.
I hope they shoot the cr*p out of each other.
I hope it goes on for years, though it certainly will not.
In fact these two have fought something like 9 or 10 wars with each other —ancient rivals.
We have a popcorn emergency on our hands.
Probably upset with the trade problems. Viet Nam is making all of our clothes now instead of China.
Has this been reported in the Compost, else, dumBO will not know.
They are ramping it up.
Have they held it?
The island crises with PI or VN are interesting, but the one that would almost certainly involved the USN directly would be the Senkaku Islands, claimed by China, Japan and Taiwan.
China could not take and also hold one of all Senkaku Island(s) without also holding one or all of the Japanese Yaeyama Islands, which are uncontested, closer to Taiwan and have 7 good airfields.
Yes. China still has it. They are building on it.
The Philippines doesn’t like it because China is building on the reef.
