Popular notion? Among who? I've never met anyone who said urine was sterile.

I heard it first from a physician (kidney specialist) who is now a tenured Ivy League medical professor.

Urine is normally essentially bacteria-free. Probably less likely to have bacteria than sweat, when considering public pool health factors.
