Nigel Farage was heading for a breakthrough in local and European elections on Thursday, as early results suggested that the UK Independence party leaders prediction of a political earthquake might be borne out.
Mr Farage was hopeful that Ukip would win the European elections, the partys first victory in a nationwide poll, leaving big questions for the leaders of each of the three traditional parties over how they deal with the populist insurgency.

David Cameron, prime minister, will wake on Friday with a clearer sense of the scale of what he calls the blue/purple battle between Tories and Ukip at the next general election, as town hall results come in from around England and Northern Ireland.
Douglas Carswell, a Tory eurosceptic MP, was quick to declare that the Tories had finished third in the European elections and that the time had come for a non-aggression pact with Ukip.
Guess that the Daily Wail can’t stop them despite all the piling on they do. They’ve been worse than MSNBC on Republicans; it’s like they are desperate to save the Tories from some ignoble fate that they just might have brought upon themselves . . .
WOOO HOOOO!
I’ve been watching Labour on twitter.
There is a great wailing and gnashing of teeth.
The first time I’ve been happy about a election in a long time.....and it’s a British election.
Good news. Geert Wilders went down in flames in the Netherlands for some reason, dropping to 4th, but it looks like a great night for UKIP.
The UK media bias is amazingly obvious on these stories

Hung Parliament with Labour largest party and UKIP would win its first seat at Westminster
Wow...
There is some real and profane anger on twitter about UKIP.
It’s almost like OFA-orchestrated stuff from 2012!
That means they're winning. The old guard will throw everything they have at them. Stay strong, Nigel...You will prevail.
The interviewer was hard on him, very hard, even unfair. There's been nothing but BIAS thrown at him, hate, and slander. Nigel deftly bats it aside, and stays on message.
What a great speaker. What a great LEADER. Wish we could borrow him for four years. He's TEA Party, 100%.
Woohoo, good news! Good for Farage and UKIP. If anyone hasn’t had a chance yet go watch Nigel Farage rip the EU Parliament bureaucrats to their face on Youtube. Just search there for “nigel farage european parliament” and have some fun.
Trouble is, UKIP at the moment seems like the Nigel Farage party. All the other ‘prominent’ figures within the party are either non-entities or oafish idiots like Godfrey Bloom or people who say they want to ban women wearing trousers.
