A companion of William C. Sager Jr. called 911 early Sunday to report Sager was being harassed inside Mollys Pub by the management and two off-duty police officers.
Soon after that call, Sager was thrown down a set of stairs and placed in handcuffs while out cold.
Then, still in handcuffs and bleeding from the ears and mouth, he was dragged out on the sidewalk, a short distance from the bar. When a friend tried to intervene, he was placed under arrest.
Later, when on-duty police responded, they found an internal surveillance tape from Mollys in the trash nearby.
These new details emerged Friday as a wave of Buffalo police officers, troubled by the events at 3199 Main St. five days ago, shared what they knew. A Sager family member also confirmed much of what others told The News.
Sager, who was to be married in July, remains in the intensive care unit at Erie County Medical Center, unaware of his surroundings. Police and people who have visited him say there is little chance he will recover from his severe brain injury.
These reports suggest that at least one of the off-duty officers inside Mollys Pub early Sunday was more than a passive observer to the beating.
The off-duty officer retrieved his handcuffs so they could be clicked around Sagers wrists. He then complained to responding officers about Sagers friend, who was arrested.
Said one cop: Why would an off-duty officer put handcuffs on an unconscious man?

This is really a bad case. This person’s life is now in ruins. I still don’t see how they can justify treating him like that.
To their credit the Buffalo PD seems to be doing a real investigation instead of closing ranks around those two thugs.
Just another life ruined by “Murder Inc.”
it could bewell choreographed kabuki. people need to remain vigilant about this one.
Would they have done that investigation without the video? Will whoever threw that video in the trash be charged?
They did tox tests on these guys, right?
I suspect the bar owner tossed it and I bet he will be charged, too. They won't let their own go down alone.
JBT
Give the Thin Blue Lie a chance. They’ll wait till things cool down and then promote the goons.
Thank goodness the officers made it hone safe that night! (Tick, tick, tick...)
Did Sager initiate some kind of brawl? Granted if police were there, they should have tried to calm down the brawl.
Some sort of scape goat needed, yep.
They’ll investigate it like Eric Holder is investigating the IRS, Benghazi, Fast & Furious, black panther voter intimidation etc.
It is cases like this that makes me scream> Bring Back Public Hangings, Every person involved deserves to swing from a rope.
In a just word, any time an LEO was involved in a deadly force incident they would undergo drug/alcohol/steroid testing.
This is little different than the standards a locomotive engineer or bus driver would be held to, or are police more equal than that?
Don’t count on them to truly be as critical as they need to be. Never underestimate Team Blue’s willingness to protect their own.
The Buffalo police may be doing a great investigation, but they still were aware of the culture of cruelty with some of the officers. No one spoke up earlier.
