The current regime merely wants to make more space in the prison system for those who disagree with them. The Party does not tolerate dissent. Period.

We have something like 40 separate prisons in Michigan alone. Many of them are closed which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if they’re closed because they’re unneeded.

Personally I’d like to use them to house elected officials and the homeless. (The homeless get unlocked doors)

The Bible is much more focused on fining the culprit in a crime, or possible community service for those types of crimes, i.e. chain gangs. But we make imprisonment too attractive, too easy on the offender. Get rid of cable, get rid of exercise machines, make them do some of the chain gang work, gardens, etc. and you will see populations go down also. I would love to see where the prison population is actually going down, maybe Arizona?

The U.S. has 5% of the world's population, but houses 25% of the world's prisoners - our rate is the highest in the world.

I have a friend who got a drug conviction some years back. He pleaded guilty to a felony in exchange for probation and no jail time. Unfortunately, that decision has haunted him over the following years, because it’s REALLY difficult to get hired as a professional software developer with a conviction on your background check. Particularly in this economic climate.

These "just deserts" are not reforming criminals or providing a deterrent to future offense. They're establishing a continuous criminal class.

Well, ya gotta create Democrat voters and politicians somewhere!
