At both of the military contractors I’ve worked at recently they were constantly monitoring for political correctness. We were required to challenge people who told jokes so we wouldn’t be considered “condoners.” (Because jokes could offend people.) We were too afraid to speak about anything. The most recent employer frowned on ANY conversation not directly related to work. If somebody was telling you they were planning a fishing trip they’d first stand up, stretch, while looking to see if anybody could overhear.
A Russian who came here after the collapse of the Soviet Union told me, “I had more freedom in Russia than at work here.”
Which companies were those? Even KBR wasn’t that bad.
