Students at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota have cancelled an event to celebrate the end of the year after complaints that bringing a camel on campus could offend those of Middle Eastern cultures.
The Hump Day event, put on by the Residence Hall Association (RHA), was supposed to be a petting zoo type of atmosphere in which students could hang out and take photos with a live camel. According to Aaron Macke, the groups advisor, the camel is owned by a local vendor and trained for special events.
But the event was subsequently cancelled after students took to Facebook to proclaim their concerns. The students said they were concerned about the money spent on bringing the camel to campusaround $500and the implication that it would be racially insensitive to Middle Eastern cultures.
They are saying just bringing the camel on campus is racist toward middle easterners.
Speaking of popular culture... have you ever seen the commercial on TV that shows a camel walking through an office and he says, “Mike Mike Mike... do you know what day it is???”
Mike rolls his eyes and the camel says, “it’s huuuuump daaaaay!!”
Perhaps that is what the kids were thinking of in planning this event.
I think I’m about damn ready to move to Russia.
I wonder what animal would be offensive to light-complexioned Americans? To Europeans?
What the university should do is announce that they were gonna show swine, but then decided that it might be offensive to - I don't know - North Dakotans. If asked to explain that, university representatives could demonstrate their Political Correctness by saying that every Minnesotan knows that North Dakotans are pigs.
That just goes to show how convoluted Political Correctness has become nowadays.
Regards,
How could I possibly avoid the double entendré of “hump” in a camel thread???
There are regional flora and fauna all over the world. Is referencing any of these things supposed to be insensitive?
Is a llama racist to South Americans? Was the Dr. Doolittle movie insensitive because of the Pushmi-Pullyu?
Was the Disney cartoon Lady and the Tramp insensitive because of the Siamese cats?
This is what happens when we don't teach the children reading, writing, and arithmetic in grade school. They go on to focus on this mush when they (somehow) get into college.

How does THAT work? The presence of a camel, in and of itself, shouldn't be offensive to anyone. Now, if you put a put a bumper sticker on the back of the camel that said, "I brake for Al Qaeda", THEN you might have an argument.
Is the Arab League boycotting zoos and circuses now?
Well, there is a reason they call camels the “ships of the desert.”
What do those kids have for brains?
A sheep is easier, you don’t need a ladder, just put her hind legs in your boots!
You know I used to wonder how the German people could have been so blind as to follow Hitler? Now I see exactly how! So many people are either outright stupid or bat $hit crazy!
get the right kind of camel and maybe the kids won’t complain
an interspecific homosexual male camel
that should keep all the noisy college boys happy...
“Was the Disney cartoon Lady and the Tramp insensitive because of the Siamese cats?”
No, not because of the Siamese cats.
But gross insensitivity was displayed by referring to the poor, under represented, non-privileged, homeless character as a “tramp”. (sarc)
Are we taklin one humpers or two humpers?
Unfortunately there is a female dog in heat around here and the male Pit Bull goes crazy and humps everyones legs. Those claws hurt. lol.
That’s related to the topic, somehow....
Saw camels at the Zoo today.
When we left I said: Now we are back in The Jungle!
Does ANYONE have fun in Minnesota anymore?
